I need to use windows scheduler to stop and then start the MSDE service.

Example, the entire pc is backed up to tape each night and I want to stop the MSDE service whilst the tape backup is happening and then restart it after.

Help please!

thank you

Jon

Uhhhhhh...WHY????????

You can use a NET STOP and NET START command for this, which you can schedule from windows scheduler. It will let you stop or start the services as needed. It would be better to:

1. Make a backup of all your databases, including the system databases.
2. Exclude the directory, from your entire PC backup, that includes the data and log files for SQL Server.
3. Include the directory containing all the backups and make sure the backup time for SQL Server doesn't cross with the PC backup time.

Yes, I know this sounds peculiar, but when dealing with Customers servers, they insist that the overnight backup backs up the entire pc and will not allow me exclude the database folder from the backup, therefore the only way is to stop the service and then restart it after the backup has complete.

Just tried it. That does the job nicely.

thanks

Jon
