David writes "Hi Guys,

Hope someone can help, we have a distributor/publisher set up with SQL Server 2000 and Service pack 1, it holds a merge and a transactional publication, through which around 100 laptops containing SQL Server personal edition subscribe via anonymous pull subscriptions. They connect up remotely via the phone lines.
Our problem is that when they synchronise with the merge subscription, the process cycles through the articles an incredible number of times (203 I counted the other day - taking 1 hour 11 minutes), this means that the process takes far longer than it should for the amount of data being downloaded (several thousand records at most).
This did not occur whilst we were testing using only 4 machines, so I suspect it has something to do with the number of generations the merge agent is monitoring, however as the process is occurring over telephone lines I am reluctant to increase the number of generations per batch.
Does antone have any idea if this is the cause of the problem and what I can do to fix it.

Thanks in advance
David Droogleever"
