using sql server management studio -- how can I schedule a backup to automatically take place every day?

You can do it by creating new Maintainance plan for the database.

SSMS, right click on maintenance plans and create a new plan.
The type of plan is "Database Maintenance Plan" you have to select "Backup Database Task" it is fairly simple, even a DBA can do it....
