What is the best book for SQL Server 2005 administration? For sql programming I assume the best book is professional sql server 2005 by Rob Viera.

I was not able to find a similar book for Administration. Any suggestions?

SQL 2005 Administrator's Companion seems pretty complete to me:
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Server-2005-Administrators-Companion/dp/0735621985

Other than that, if you want to take a look at some specific parts of SQL 2005, like Integration services, Notification Services etc. you will have to look for a specific book which satisfies your need.

Thank you Harsh!

I followed the link. There is only one review for this book! Have you read this book? Is it par with INSIDE SQL SERVER 2000?

That is a good reference material! You can not read BOL cover-2-cover. That will be too heavy , too much time consuming.

Kalen Delaney has the 2005 book out already:

I have read this link,

In SQL2K5 the INSIDE SQL SERVER series has been split into 4 books. Two of them have written by ITZIK BEN-GAN they are really good.

One is written by kalen, it is called INSIDE SQL SERVER STORAGE ENGINE. I am not sure whether this is a good book for a DBA.

Unfortunately there are lot of SQL2K5 books with GUI screen shots.

I need a book for administration par with INSIDE SQL SERVER 2000 or PROFESSIONAL SQL SERVER 2000 programming By Rob Vierra. Both are great books.

Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Storage Engine is the 2005 version of Inside SQL Server 2000. Both are written by Kalen Delaney.

This is the book for DBAs!

OKAY, I will hold my order for couple of days!
Once you get your copy , read 1-2 chapters and let me know if it is worth buying.

Did you find any other SQL2K5 good books?

I will not be providing a review of this book in the near future. I'm way too busy to do that. I don't need to read a single word from the new book to know that it's the best DBA book. I already know that since Kalen Delaney wrote this one and she also wrote the 2000 version.

I don't have any 2005 books right now. I've been using BOL and the Internet.

Tara, check the link http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0735621055/ref=sib_dp_pop_toc/102-8474142-1774555?ie=UTF8&p=S006#reader-link

The book is ONLY abot STORAGE, it doesn't talnk abot SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, service broker , administration.

This may be a good book for architecture but not for administration.

SSIS, SSRS, SSAS are not DBA things! As a DBA, you may be responsible for them but they are not consider database administration tasks.

And yes it is good for DBAs because the book deals with the architecture!

Perhaps you are confused as to what a DBA does.

i got the Inside storage engine. It's amazing.
also for a dba you might want to get the query optimization and tuning.
it's also a good read.

Thats correct!
I think there are very few ONLY DBA openings! There is always a overlap..

Agreed that there will be some overlap. You've been asking what the best DBA book is for 2005 and I've told you. You should buy a 2005 development book if you're interested in develoment tasks such as SSIS, SSRS, or SSAS (this is probably a data warehouse task and not development task).

Kalen Delaney)

which is the SECOND BEST book for sql server 2005 administration?

SQL Server Books Online

No other books are needed outside of Kalen's book and BOL for DBA stuff!
