| Taking offline a database makes the database inaccessible to anyone, but it doesn't remove it from SQL Server. Detach removes the database from SQL Server so that the files are released.Tara Kizerhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

| Detach completely removes the database from the server, it is no longer listed in the server's list of databases, as far as the server is concerned the database no longer exists. Take Offline is similar in the sense that the database is not available to any users (not even sysadmin), the server closes it completely, but it doesn't remove it from the server's list of databases. For example, run SELECT * FROM sysdatabasesbefore and after taking a database offline and detaching. |
