I believe it is only available with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise or Developer Edition, and it has to be enabled.

Exactly. Was reading about it a little yesterday http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb326755.aspx , and was wondering if anyone's tried it.

note that this isn't a datatype. it's a storage format.
It also present a problem because you can't restore a backup made on ss2k5 sp1 to ss2k5 without sp1

Since it is only available in the Enterprise Edition, I am reluctant to develop something that can only be run on that edition in production.

A few months ago, we had a post here from someone who had developed a DB this way on Developer Edition, and found they could not deploy to production because they were running Standard Edition. Oops.

i haven't seen this thread but if they had that problem all they had to do is simply comment the code for
enabling vardecimal.

it's implementation is handled completly by sql server
