I was doing some research today on how to get my SQL Server Compact Edition working with replication to a MS SQL Server 2005 EE.I was reading the Compact Edition books online ()BOL) ...I am disgusted that the ADS (Access Data Sync) uses IIS as a web-services ploy to sync data.I am disgusted that RDS (remote data services) does the same thing.I had hoped and prayed that Syncing (Merge/Replication) SQL Server Compact Edition with MS SQL Server would not use IIS!!!In my 20 years of experience, the first 10 using MS Technologies ... I started using IIS3 back on Windows NT 4.0.IIS 3,4,5 and now I assume IIS 6 have gaping security hole issues you could drive the Queen Mary through. My clients around the Boston, MA USA area are not tech saavy, they have no technical people on staff really, they have no idea how to configure IIS, they have no idea if it goes down or not, and they have no idea on how to provide security with firewalls. I would INSIST that anyone who had any version of windows to NOT install or run ANY version of IIS at any cost!!!!!!Is MS just starting to use IIS for replication? or has this always been the case. In all my years of dealing with MS SQL Server from version 6.5 ... I've not had to deal with replication. It was always a stand-alone database with desktop clients ... no mobile clients.Sorry for the rant .... but I can't believe any reasonable IT professional would deal with this. I need replication without IIS!How in God's name can I do this ... or am I stuck???????????Thanks! Tom Holmes |

IIS is part of the microsoft stack - deal with it. The alternative to IIS is what? Apache? If your customers are not tech savvy, how do you expect them to config and admin an apache web server? Apache is way more difficult to work with than IIS.This rant is silly really. I think there are probably 6 people in the world who use sql compact edition anyway. -ec |

Isn't that why they are your clients and not doing it themselves ?You are meant to provide the savvy. As much as some of Microsoft's decisions confuse and irritate me, using a web service stack to sync mobile clients makes much more sense than opening up your SQL Server to the world at large. But I hope you feel better Damian"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." - Emerson |
