Hi - I am about to sign up with a new hosting company and I wanted to check my use of Express edition would be ok with their setup (full version 2005), they replied:----------yes the formats are the same but some functions in the Express Edition are not supported by the full Version as the Express Edition is for development only. We cant say if you will run into any errors as we don't know what you do and which functions you are using.----------Is this true - I figured it would be more likely that the the Express edition represented a subset of the full versions functionality and since they produced the same format, would be compatible in this direction. It smells of BS to me but i just wanted to check with the experts...what do you reckon? Many Thanks,Steve |

Yes, express doesn't have certain features. By the way, does hosting company charge differently for express and other editions? |

Thanks for the reply. They don't seem to offer support for express at all really. Can you point me in the direction of where I might find these feature differences? I have looked at the MS product comparisonhttp://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspxwhich does not indicate additional features. I am only doing pretty basic stored procedures and connecting to asp.net 2 pages. Thanks again,Steve |

SQL Express only has one feature that is not available in other Editions: User Instances, which are used to support VS Express and deployment of single user, windows forms applciations. This feature doesn't change anything about how SQL works, just how applciations are deployed. The way this feature is exposed is via the connection string. If you connection string includes the keyword User Instance=True, then you're starting a user instance for your applciation when you launch it.The only change you would need to make when deploying your application to your host is to change the connection string, which you have to do anyway to point at the hosted database, and remove User Instance=True.(No need to set it to false, just remove it.) This will allow a successful connection to the hosted database.Hosting companies often claim they "don't support Express" but that statement is made out of ignorance. SQL Express is SQL Server, not a separate product so if they support SQL Server, they support SQL Express. You just have to be aware of the change to the connection string.Regards,Mike WachalSQL ExpressThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.Use of included script samples are subject to the terms specified athttp://www.microsoft.com/info/cpyright.htm |
