I followed a Search that took me to an old article:http://www.sqlteam.com/article/our-faq-is-postedwhich has a like to the "FAQ"http://www.sqlteam.com/faq.aspwhich is no longer valid. Clicking that just takes me to the home page. personally, if I follow a link (e.g. from Google or some other site) to a specific target, and get taken to what appears to be an arbitrary page, I just click off that siteI wonder if going to a "Sorry" type page, with links to the SiteSearch (or even the SiteSearch form right there on the Sorry page) would help?Personally I would also log the 404s, and have the 404-handler route frequently-occurring 404s to an appropriate page. You may already do this, and my example does not fit the "frequently occurring" criteria!FWIW our 404 handler uses a look-up table of Exact, Starts-with and Contains matches with target redirects. The 404 log then shows which URLs were redirected successfully (and to where). So I can see a) whether the redirects were "sensible" and b) which URLs are i) not being redirected at all and ii) popular Also allows setting up redirects for www.sqlteam.com/LOGIN or even www.sqlteam.com/FAQ Kristen |
