| We have SQL Standard installed on a Windows XP. I start up SQL Server Management Studio and am presented with the authentication dialog. I select Windows Authentication and click Connect and it hangs. If I select SQL Server authentication and choose a known correct login, I get the same result (hangs). If I Cancel, all buttons are disabled, but the dialog remains. I cannot even shut it down with the upper right corner "x". The only way I've found to end it is via Task Manager. Also, if I just cancel out of the authentication dialog box without attempting to connect, I'm able to do admin things like attach/detach databases, view tables via the object browser, etc.. I cannot execute queries. Help guys, iam stuck. Thanks a lot... |

If you can access the database admin stuff in the Object Explorer have you tried clicking "New Query" to see if it opens the query window? Future guru in the making. |

| You should also install the SP and patches to your client. They aren't only for the database engine on the server. They also contain bug fixes for the client tools. Always get patched to the latest version when you encounter issues that way we can rule it out.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

Already? MS is making them like some factory candiesAfter checking the fixes, I think I'll wait for SP3. We can only afford 2 major downtimes and 1 I've already used, the other one I reserve for SP3 , otherwise this fix at the end of this yearThanks Taraquote: Originally posted by tkizer There's actually an even later patch already out. hie Tara,It seems it had nothing to do with the patches, the problem was a registered server which had its name changed on the network, so for all that time it hanged it was trying to access that server, what i had to do was to delete the registered server, and it connected fine.i did apply the patches after that tho.thanks guys, quote: Originally posted by tkizer You should also install the SP and patches to your client. | I wasn't saying that the service packs or patches would fix the issue, but you should always get these installed when an issue arises to eliminate that as the resolution. This is just standard troubleshooting procedures.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |
