| I would like to ask regarding the memory allocation fo SQL Server 2000. For example if my Data Server have 8GB physical memory installed how much memory can SQL Server 2000 utilize? Based on my research and understing SQL 2000 Server can only utilize 3GB memory? But using the AWE you can set the memory to a maximum server memory? |

It depends on two things1) The version of Windows Server operating system2) The edition of SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005

| In this case, sql2k can use up to 7gb memory. You need to put /3gb and /pae in boot.ini file, enable awe in sql and set max memory to 7gb. |

| Thanks for the efforts of replying to my questions. By the way I would like to know if I reconfigure the AWE using sp_configure and the PAE in Boot.ini setting to the maximum, does these changes will make a significant changes or improvement in terms of speed in performance of my database? Because right we are experiencing slowing down to our system, although I know that having this problem may cause of different reasons and need to consider different factors, but since we upgraded the memory of our server it would be useless if the memory allocation setup is not right. Forgive my ignorance if I ask some silly questions. Thanks! |

| More memory doesn't always give you better performance if slowness is not related to lack of memory. Many factors can affect performance, you have to find bottleneck on the server first then fix them accordingly. |
