We have two instances of SQL Server 2005 - SP1 installed on one server. The default instance starts very slowly. When looking at the log I can see the delay is due to Resource Manager based upon the following error.

Message
Resource Manager Creation Failed: 0x8004d102(XACT_E_DUPLICATE_GUID)

What does this mean?

What would cause this to happen?

How do I resolve the problem?

Thanks, Dave

Maybe msdtc related, is it running?

It does appear to be MSDTC-related, but here's the latest.

The problem jumped from the named instance of SQL Server to the default instance. I then restarted the server and the default instance was ok, but the error occurred in the named instance. It appears that whatever instance is started second experiences the problem. Any ideas?

Thanks, Dave

How do you configure memory and cpu in each instance?

The server is Windows Server 2003 EE with 16GB of memory and PAE enabled.

Both instances are configured as follows:

"Use AWE to Allocate Memory" is checked.

2048 Minimum Server Memory
6144 Maxium Server Memory

Can't find any reference, seems time to call Microsoft.

I'm in the process of reinstalling SQL Server to see if I had a bad installation. I doubt this will resolve the problem. I suspect this is more of an O/S issue.

Thanks, Dave

I tried that today and unfortunately it didn't make a difference.
