SQL Server 2005 (9.00.3042.00)The servers are actually a cluster in an active / passive configuration. There are 2 servers with internal IP addresses and then a virtual server. We'll call them 192.1, 192.2 and VirtualBox. If I remote desktop into VirtualBox and run the config manager, nothing will happen for about 45 seconds and then I get a dialog with this message "Connection to target machine could not be made in a timely fasion.". Other than 'fashion' is misspelled :), I'm unable to determine what could cause this. Are there issues running this on a clustered environment? Or are there some things I can look at to diagnose this issue?

We had to setup aliases on all nodes of our clusters in order to get the Configuration Manager to work. Since Configuration Manager is the GUI way in setting up aliases, we had to set them up via regedit. If these servers are 64-bit, then it is very important that you setup the registry entries while on the nodes since you can't get to the 64-bit registry from a 32-bit machine. Here is the key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\ConnectToAnd here is an example string value:Data: Server1\Instance1Value: DBMSSOCN,Server1,30001 (30001 being the port number)Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/

Our machines are only 32 bit. If I understand you correctly, we'll need to do this to each box itself. So in essence, if 192.1 is the active, I can modify it's reg settings, failover so 192.2 picks up and modify it's reg settings too. Then of course I'll need to fail 192.2 so the primary picks back up.See, I'm remote to the server too, just in the same country. I could have a network tech login to each box separately at the location though.EDIT: where does the port number come from in your example? If it is what I think it is, what if the server is using dynamic ports?

You have to modify all nodes as the registry is not shared amongst the nodes. You do not need to do any failovers for this.It is fine to modify the registry remotely since you are using 32-bit. regedit.exe allows you to connect to other machines.I haven't a clue about dynamic ports as mentioned in the other thread. There really is no drawback to using a static port, so I'm not sure why people go for dynamic.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/

Thanks for your insight on the registry stuff. As far as the dynamic ports, to me it gives me additional security. Everyone under the sun knows that by default SQL server listens on port 1433 but if you make that dynamic it's harder for some malicious person to get access. If they can't find it, they can't use it. |

Well don't use 1433 for your static port. We don't use 1433 for any of our production servers.Dynamic ports do not give you additional security as far as I know. The port is static until you restart, I believe.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/
