Hey everyone.

I have a problem and I am sure someone here can help. Lat night my DB was working fine, as it has been . This morning I get to the office and now everything has gone to hell in a handbag .

I can no longer connect to my sql2005 DB I get this error when trying to place an order on our order page.

"There was a problem with the website:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.)
The error has been logged."

I also notice the sql agent will not start. Any the former owner of the Co. had a eval version of sql management studio the must have just expired(could this be causing it?)

Any help anyone can offer would be great.

Check the Surface Area Config for services and connetions. The Remote Connections must have been changed to "Local Connections Only"

Is the SQL Server service running? What Edition of SQL Server is this? Are there any error messages in the Windows Application Event Log? Can you connect remotely using Management Studio even though you're web site can't?

I just looked at the event log after I tried to manually start sql and I see this .....

SQL Server evaluation period has expired.

Now why would he have used a eval copy of sql server 2005 on a machine that powers a business?

I'm afraid none of my answers to that question would be very helpful

Well Thanks anyway.

Thats an answer I need to find out. Why in the world would you use an eval copy of anything on a site that ships out over 50k packages a year.

Now lets hope this is really the issue and it can get resolved.

You said he is the former owner, so maybe he knew he was selling before the evaluation expired and didn't want to pay for a real license.

Well I just wanted to let you know the server company needed to do a full install, saying they could not upgrade. They tried to do a work around and it did not work.
