I have a handful of jobs that I need to troubleshoot, but this one will hopefully give me enough insight to do the rest myself. I need to figure out why a Maintenance Plan that performs a Diff Backup on 4 databases, and then a transaction log back up on the 4 databases is failing. I just get the following error message, and I cannot tell what failed.

How can I find out how to fix this problem? And please let me know if I am doing something wrong. (For instance, perhaps those two tasks shouldn't be together.)

for a differential to succeed, there needs to be a previous successful full backup. have you performed fulls on all your databases?

Where do I check the log file at?

eyechart:
The full backups occur on early Sunday morning. And the Diffs run throughout the week. This has ran successfully in the past. It has only began very recently.

I should also mention that all the databases are NOT in Simple Recovery Mode.

The following information may or may not be useful in helping me:

I have noticed that there is a file system back up (ntbackup) occurring during some of the same hours that the SQL Jobs are running. In the event log, I see the folowing message after the file system backup begins to execute:

"I/O is frozen on database model. No user action is required. However, if I/O is not resumed promptly, you could cancel the backup."

However, one of the Diffs fails before the backup begins.

If you are talking about the Log Viewer, my error is in the original post above.

Plan log file is not log viewer, it logs all messages produced by the plan and you specify log file path when create plan.

Thanks... So that is an expected message, and ntbackup is not the problem (so far).

Can anyone tell me where to find the plan log file?

Did you check your maintenance plan? Default log file path is sql server's log file path.
