| If I setup mirroring do I need a license for both servers or just the live server? We currently use Oracle and I'm trying to advocate a switch to SQL Server. With Oracle you don't need a license for the non-live server and the license transfers to the failover server from the failed server when the live server fails. Is it the same for SQL Server? Also, please confirm that a license is not required for dev and test servers.Thanks. |

I don't understand. Does that mean we have to negotiate it with Microsoft? They don't have a formal policy on it? We don't currently have an agreement with Microsoft and I need to know the answer to this in order to further my argument to switch. |

| Normally you would need a server license for the mirrored servers. You can negotiate this with them though like we did if you have a large enough MS shop like we do.Note that for your dev/test servers, you need a developer edition license for each developer. Developer edition licenses are not server licenses, each client must be licensed.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |
