I will be installing SQL Server 2005 enterprise edition for the first time and was looking for some hints...

unfortuntely, I don't know alot about what kind of applications they will be using the databases for.. but I do know that I have 400GB to allocate. My manager suggested a seperate volume for the SQL Server Binaries.. not sure why... ANY OPINIONS ON THAT???

This is what he suggested
C:\ OS
D:\SQL Server application install
E:\datafiles
F:\Logfile
e:tempdb

any hints, suggestions, opinions, things to watch out for... ???????

I was thinking more along the lines of
c:\OS and application installs (sql server etc..)
E:\datafiles and TempDB
F:\Logsfiles

At our environment, we generally split between single box and cluster farm. If the cluster farm, we tend to use:
C:\Local System (OS and apps)
D:\Local Data (mainly for temporarily backups or others utilities files, SQL installation file etc etc)
F:\SAN data
G:\SAN transaction logs
T:\SAN Tranfer (file from backup disk is transfered to here before gets restored)

For single box:
C:\Local System (OS and apps)
D:\Local SQL Data and Transfer (as well as utility files)
E:\Local SQL Transaction Log

Generally, rack mount server has maximum of 3 slots so we have RAID 1 for each logical drive.

Better to put tempdb on its own disk.

How much do you put this one generally (% of the data disk for instance)?

Do you put both tempdb.mdf and tempdb.ldf on the same disk?

In term of SAN, can this disk be a SATA (slow disk) instead of FIBRE (fast disk)?

It depends, I usually give it 200gb. Should separate data from log, and we always use fiber.

Hi rmiao

If you are using 200gb, how much is your user databases in total? I assume this will be close 1TB?

Thanks

No. Sql2k5 needs big tempdb than sql2k, especially when you enable row versioning features.
