| Hi guysHave you guys use this product - RedGate SQL Doc which is basically documenting all about your dbs? Any issues? We are thinking to use the command line feature which I think it's good idea have a version control stuff. The only think that I don't like is it's only saved that as HTML or CHM. It would be nice to store into dbs.Or do you use any other products?I am appreciated your feedback.Thanks |

| I have tried trial version of SQL doc. This is an excellent tool. But if you want to use command line features you have to go for Professional Edition. |

sqlspec runs from cmd line without extra $$$, has more features than redgate's, is cheaper, and runs on 11 different platforms. ...but I'm biased.

I had a look on this and it looks good. Are you happy with this products? Also, does this one records the DTS, jobs, operator etc etc stuffs? |

I use the APEX SQL DOC as part of the Apex Develooper studio (which I won from this site..so a little biased.). Our bank has several RedGate licenses which some of the SQL guys use...
Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. |

| I tried the regular evaluation, not the beta you just posted. I'll give the beta a try later.I ran into a limit with the total length of the path and filename; long path to My Documents plus a long database name did it. It worked OK when I changed to a shorter path.Can you have it also decrypt SQL Server passwords? It does produce really nice documentation. Very impressive.CODO ERGO SUM |

wow, thanks MVJ! coming from you that means a lot! I'll get right on that password decryption. about the path bug: many Win32 apis break on paths longer than MAX_PATH chars, which is 255 chars IIRC. Apparently the .NET libraries use some of these crippled win32 apis and thus they are also broken on these long paths. win32 api code is littered with stuff like this: TCHAR szPath[MAX_PATH]; even though the underlying OS code supports paths that are longer (4k i believe).the workaround you always hear is "use shorter paths".

I guess I can use the DOS compatible names to shorten the path:C:\DOCUME~1\mvj\MYDOCU~1\elsasoft\output instead ofC:\Documents and Settings\mvj\My Documents\elsasoft\output CODO ERGO SUM |

or, just put sqlspec in c:\bin\sqlspec.exe or some simlarly short path. Then drop a shortcut to it whereever is convenient. Then the output directory will be c:\bin\output, which ought to be ok for even the longest database object names.
