Is it possible to change a 'Default' instance to a unique name?Am thinking I shouldn't have to re-install SQL 2005?

So the only way to change the instance name is to re-install SQL 2005?

You can setup alias name of Default instances to friendly name if you want. But you need to install second time for named instances

I am loading a clean base server, Windows Server 2003R2.I will install SQL 2005, creating a unique instance name. I will restore the data to that instance name.Fingers crossed.Kerry

why default doesn't work for you? i mean why you need different name. I think you can change server name to your requirement. Ask your hardware guys , they have more information regarding this?

I will need to change the Instance name as I am working with utilizing a Many-to-1 backup scenario. On my replication server there will be multiple instances of SQL installed to act as a replication dump for many individual databases.
