I'm currently looking at setting up database mirroring using SQL 2005 had a thought regarding automatic failover using a witness. We have an application that is provided by a third party, and it connects to the DB by referencing an ODBC connection set up on each individual machine.

My question is how will the application be able to connect to the mirrored DB in case of a failover? Would I set the ODBC connection to point to the witness?

Many application are already cached in memory (drivers like SQL native client) but microsoft has suggested to use connection strings to be sure application fails over automatically.

Connection strings include :failover partner

Check: Application failover in database mirroring in google.

Thanks for the reply. By using the SQL Native Driver I can specify a mirror DB.
